Sowing Strawberries

Strawberries can be grown from runners or from seeds. Both methods have advantages and drawbacks.

Growing from seeds take more time, but one can easily plant several types of strawberries and/or grow a much larger number of plants.

When strawberries are grown from the seeds, there is much more work to be done, compared to growing them from the runners or planting them from plants in containers. Planting small strawberries grown from the seeds, planting grown runners or bought plants in containers is practically the same.

Sowing Strawberries

To sow strawberries to get small strawberry plants, one need to obtain good seeds of the strawberry variety that suits – type of strawberry (June-bearing, ever-bearing, day-neutral), soil and climate required etc, good potting soil and pots or something similar for sowing many plants.

If soil is in the bag, before opening bag, shake the bag well just to make soil loose. Soil is put from the center and gradually to the edges.

It is important that potting holes on the edge get the same amount of soil as the center ones. After all holes are filled with soil, one should press it to make it little bit more firm and compact.

Good seeds can be found for cheap, just be sure that variety is one that you want. It should be in two bags (one in side another), so that it is protected from outside elements. Seeds are very small and one little bag can contain plenty of them.

Some gardeners keep strawberry seeds in the fridge to make them grow faster and in greater numbers. Personally, I never had any problems with seeds without this 'treatment' - maybe I will make a such test, but till then I will be using my strawberry seeds as usual.

Seeds are taken between fingers (just as salt) and than one should try to sow 4-5 seeds per potting hole. If more seeds are sowed in the hole, never mind, excess plants will be removed later.

After sowing the seeds, one should add little bit of soil in each hole and gently press.

Add water in the form of mist. Put planted container in warm and protected place and keep the soil moist.

Sowing Strawberries

After plants start to grow, remove all but 2-3 best plants in each pot hole. When little strawberries have three leaves remove all but one plant per potting hole. Then, depending on the pot hole size, strawberries are grown until they are ready to be planted on permanent place – just like caught runners or bought strawberries plants.

Distance from the plants depends on the size of strawberry plants and can range from 10 cm (4") or so for small varieties to 25 cm (10") for large varieties.
